Slippery Slope

Down the slippery slope

Of icy past

And current treachery

They go,

Balancing precariously

On the edge of

What to do

With what they know.

The Eyes Have It

There are stories,

In there,

Behind the dark irises’

Glare.

More than words,

Being said,

With her piercing eyes

Instead.

Rail Road

Where the rail

Meets the road

And the gravel

Kisses tracks,

Linger not

At the cross-point.

For the trains

Will chug on

And engines run

Because they can.

Mirrored World

Where does solid begin?

Where does the liquid end?

Do the depths mirror

What lurks behind the bend?

Does the murk hold the answer?

Does the shimmer hide foe?

Will you know where to dive

And where you should not go?

No Chicken, No Egg.

“The sign says not to hike beyond this point.”

“Signs can’t talk,” Jerry guffawed, “and anyway, that’s just legal butt-covering.”

Robert looked at the icy terrain. It looked awfully slippery. It was getting late and they still needed to hike back. He didn’t think they should continue. He also hated being Nagging Grandma. He shrugged.

Bennett elbowed him and pushed to the lead. “Well, I’m no sissy. All the fun’s up there. Road less traveled and all that.”

Robert’s neck warmed at the insult. Bennett always had to make things a competition, including who was Jerry’s ‘real’ friend and who the fifth-wheeler.

“You coming or you chicken?” Bennett sniggered.

“Last one up’s a rotten egg!” Jerry grinned.

The two barreled ahead.

Robert trudged below them, full of dread.

Later he would wonder how to tell their parents that chicken and rotten egg were the last words they ever said.

Egged On

Beware the prod

When arrows nod.

Their seeming prompt

May in fact be

The footprints stomped

To show the real way

Out the swamp.

Risky Paths

It is okay to see the risk

And not step

Fully

Into it.

Courage does not always

Mean

Precarious

Heaving ho.

Perilous paths

Indeed at times

Need forging,

But aren’t

All

Tests of

True bravery,

When often enough

The careful way

Around

Is a daring

Opportunity.

Ode to Tentative

cautiosly determined OsnatHalperinBarlev

When faced with rough terrain ahead

Or uneven steps that may

Hold the potential

For plunging

Into pain

Or disruption:

Proceed with care.

Caution does not mean

Cowardice.

Bluster and bold moves do not denote

Good reason.

Determination often means

Holding on

To what railing is available

And bending down

To circumstance

So one may reach

Desired heights

Without the disservice

Of overzealous

Pride

To

Detriment.

Before

be-kind-dalai-lama

Before you lash out,

Hesitate.

Before you wit your words to punch,

Take pause.

Before you bully to submission

Before you weave a snarky thread

To tie another’s tongue

Before you bask in righteous indignation

Before you bathe in perceived superiority

Of color

Nationality

Views

Beliefs

Affiliation

Possessions

Excess …

Breathe a moment

To consider

And re-assess

The empty value

The pseudo-justification

In power used

To inflict hurt.
