Where the rail
Meets the road
And the gravel
Kisses tracks,
Linger not
At the cross-point.
For the trains
Will chug on
And engines run
Because they can.

Which way does this road wind?
Where to goes the crack?
Do the rocks that line the path
Hold answers
Or hold back?

Which way next?
He requested,
Will it be up
Or down?
Are we headed
To Nature
Or perhaps
Sutherland?
Will we go
With the horses
On the bridle path left,
Or take the loop
With the birders
And turn right
At the cleft?

Take your time
As you climb.
Hold the rail.
Breathe in. Exhale.
On the stair way
Of life
Steps of joy
Steps of strife.
Both the rise
And descent
Are energies
Quite well spent,
As long as your heart
Can extend
To see a tad
‘Round the bend.

Bravely walk the briar byways
Brushed to either side by burrs
Each step bordered by the brambles
That await the birth of berries
And bar the fruit from brazen strays.

A long way stretches forward
Past the past
Toward light,
As they walk
In the footsteps
Of those who’d been here
And passed.

Ancient stones
Tell a story
Of feet treading from
Light
To dark,
And the tunnel
Foreboding
As history
Left
Its mark.

Helmet on
Harness tight
Zip along
In a flight
As gibbons chatter
Out of sight
In the tree tops’
Stunning height.
