Fence Friends

Side by side

Nose to fence

They stand in awe

And suspense:

Here’s a duck

There’s a mouse.

Is the red thing

Their house?

What do animals

Eat?

Not small children?

Just treats?

From their safe

Vantage point

The zoo does not

Disappoint.

And they admire

The goose

Glad its not

On the loose.

Not ripe in May

Not quite an apple

Mandrake grows best

In partial dapple.

No screams will sound

When it is pulled

Though tales will try

To have you fooled.

The fruit is fine

In moderation

But beware of higher

Concentration.

Medicinal

Though it may well be,

Won’t eat the seeds

If it were me.

Bedtime for Luna

“So, remember,” her hand on the door’s handle. “Bedtime at 9, only one treat, brush your teeth.”

“And no opening the door for anyone,” he intoned.

At least it got him a smile. There weren’t many of them of late.

She tucked an errant lock of hair behind an ear and suddenly he couldn’t stand it.

“When will you be back?” He knew. He had to ask.

She glanced at the window. The court-order weighed heavy on her mind.

“When Luna goes to bed behind the mountain, I’ll be home.”

For the last time.
