Madam Toole
Had a rule:
No one sitting
On her stool.
That chair
Was her
Jewel.

Laid-back Lizzie
Would not be pressed
Into a tizzy.
She left herself
With ample
Time,
To saunter to and
From her
Crime.
She kept pace
When sirens blared
And ambled on
As others stared.
She did not hold
With running
Fast.
But strolling was what
Caught up with her
At last.

He copied how his father walked.
He mimicked his older sister.
He laughed at jokes nobody heard.
He scared the babysitter.
He wouldn’t do a thing
That wasn’t done by others.
He was an endless mirror
And annoyance to his brothers.
He drove them all to near insane
Till finally came the time
When he left to get
Hired as a mime.

Tim had a serious thing
For
Ice cream.
No matter the flavor
It was something
He’d favor.
His mama thought it
Extreme
To hold a lone food
Supreme,
So she came up with
A scheme
That worked wonders on
Tim:
Every new food she’d
Mix right into the
Ice cream.
So she fixed it with okra
And kale
And some beans,
And added an olive
And handfuls of
Greens,
And for his dessert
Even mashed in
Sardines.
And the boy ate the lot
Smiling full to the
Brim.
It was not until college
He caught on to the
Theme.

Gallivanting Gary liked to roam about
In town.
He refused to let a passing hardship weigh
Him down.
He took his time to get things done.
He rambled on and on.
But once the dinner bell at home was rang
He’d lift his feet
And run.

He reports first thing in the morning.
He reports again every night.
There’s little that could dissuade him
From being absolutely forthright.
He records every scene with a flourish.
His voice reflects every sight,
As with journalist’s flair
He spells data in ample delight.
He would not be distracted from telling,
The minutia has got to be tight.
After all, he is in potty training
And to him no discharging is trite.

Silly Billy was too chilly
So he too a little nap.
Silly Billy did not really
Think it would cause him mishap.
Frilly Tilly woke him shrilly
And with very little slack,
Sent him home and told poor Billy
That he isn’t welcome back.

She looked so fraught
I thought she fought
For what she brought.
She apparently did not
But then still she almost forgot
To tell me of some fish she’d caught
And how distraught
The worms she bought
Were at the thought
That she decided that she ought
Just put potatoes
In the pot.

As they fly
Passing by
Tumbling through
Loops of sky
To hoot and cry,
They spend the day
Waving high
To Earth defy
As some shake heads
Oh my, oh my
And wonder why…

Note: These photos are from Canada’s “Wonderland” amusement park in Vaughn, where my family spent a day this past July, high flying and earth-defying while I mostly did the photo-taking and oh-my-why’ing. … 😉 (In the photo above, they are in the three short horizontal lines in free fall on the vertical line, a moment before being turned upside down and sideways and goodness knows what else). It was a delightful day all around (pun?) till I got on one kiddie ride in the afternoon … Now, if you’re into these contraptions, that place is an all out-human-milkshake inventive park, just be warned and don’t be fooled by the miniature height requirements: they start them early and loop-di-doop-whoop-loop even those rides meant for preschoolers. …

He will guard it with his presence
He will goggle eyes at you
If you dare come too near
To
This blanket square
That your fingers and soft yarn
Conspired for a little one’s doll to
Darn.
