Numbered

‘Twas the best of the betters

The coveted spot

In the field,

Where the corn rose in sunshine

And worms did not stay

Concealed.

He fought hard for the privilege,

Beak and claws he had

To wield.

As the count of days rose

His calls echoed less

Even keeled.

Yet he hoped that the home

He’d claimed for her

Still appealed.

Stretch above

To where the flapping

Propels you farther

On the breeze.

From there to see

The light retreating

Over Earth’s curve

At day’s reprieve.

In the slight pause between

Flapping up,

Flapping down,

Live the breath

And the lift

That propel

To carry on.

It was down

To the wire

To find glorious

A perch,

As the skies

Drew around them

A gray dome

As church.

For the pests

Who won’t rest

In their quest

To infest:

I suggest

You divest

Lest

I’ll wrest

Back my nest.

I don’t jest

It is best

As would surely attest

The unblessed

Who’d transgressed

And I had ‘addressed.’
