Go against
The pressing grain
And the common
Mindset,
To reach high
Toward the sky
And uniformity
Upset.

In the game of
Standing out from
The crowd,
There is little more distinct
Than the
Distinctly
Indistinct.

Won’t hold back
An all out bloom,
Fully pinked
By soul’s perfume.

Rise above
Hardship’s fray
In gentle curls
Of delicate
Pink,
And an underbelly
Of powerful
Orange
Smelted from the
Brink.

Things were winding down. Most tables had been cleared and many guests had left for home. Only the hardiest (or closest kin) still remained. Sated and a bit deflated with fatigue, they lounged, gossiped, tapped phones, and not-so-surreptitiously checked the time. Several small children slept on makeshift cots of pulled together chairs.
Music still played but with more inertia than conviction.
The celebration was officially over, though not for everyone: two boys, oblivious to the late hour and overall exhaustion, danced on.

In a row they
Were planted
Born from seed
To grow
Along.
Individual
They heightened,
Each one as
Singular
As a song.
For the Weekly Photo Challenge: Rows
Maybe it is healing
And the saving of lives,
Or the wonder of teaching
And forming young minds.
Maybe it is farming
To nourish and grow,
Or building the homes
For the shelter we know.
Maybe it is writing
Putting words to the page,
Or any vocation
That forms our age.
May it be that whatever
Strums your soul, fills your need
I pray that you find it
And its call you will heed.

Do not shy
From the dye,
Do not cringe
From the fringe.
What gives flowers the hue
Can teach color to you.
If two tones were the all
We’d be so bored we’d bawl.
So go on and dye more
Shades of lovely galore.

“It isn’t armor that makes one a good kitchen-window sentry,” he instructed the younglings during a quick peck break.
“Is it the blade?” piped Pepper and stretched a leg to critically eye a very immature spur.
The bird clucked fondly at the chick. Always the feisty one, Pepper was. Last to emerge from the egg but first in every yard-race since.
“No, Son,” the quail stretched tall. “It is all in the plume. Once it grows, hold it high, bob it well.”

What makes you, the real you?
What holds truth to your being?
How do you separate
Masks and screens
From true seeing?
In the search to find you,
What peels off
What is freeing?
Do you take on the journey?
Would it matter yet still
To find out
Or accept
That you’re all of it
Whole,
And besides it some more
Guaranteeing?
