Go below
The surface
Of the things you know
And into hollows
That are there, but
You have not yet
Allowed
To grow.

When faced with
This-is-just-impassable,
The oh-too-dangerous,
And far-too-far
To pull out from;
One step
And then
A careful second,
With a resolute pick
And sturdy rope,
Will help lock arms
With trembling courage,
To climb you out
Of hazard’s maw.

Make a splash
Face the turmoil
Don’t let the surf
Turn you back.
Hold on tight
To your courage
Let waves become
Your heart’s soundtrack.

Hanging twixt
Earth and sky,
An arm waves
Sure and high,
Swinging ropes,
Fit to fly.

I see you
Taking steps
Into faith
And thin air,
Holding hope
Like a rickety railing
Buffeted by winds
That had blown away
Trust in
A safe step
Anywhere.

My first bike
Was a neighbor’s bike.
“Too many hills,” my mom had said
As if topography in any way diminished
The accelerated thrill
Of legs off pedals
From the top of the rise
To our street.
There was no arguing
Or vowing to share and never fight.
We knew her words were code
For “we cannot afford.”
But my sister’s friend across the street
Did have a bike
And with it the absolute power to dispense
Rides, routes, direction, and duration.
There were no training wheels
To ease one in.
There was no question of admitting
Complete lack of experience
And risking an evaporated offer.
So it was guts and trepidation
A stranglehold on the handlebar
And the utter exhilaration
Of flying.

As the first freesia
Bravely blooms
Buds await
In scaly wombs
Till it tastes
Sun’s perfume.

Do not fear
The abrupt edge
Of life
When the path
Disappears
And clefts
Into strife.
Take a breath
Blow out fear
Know a brand new
Adventure
Is immediately
Near.

So many times the path ahead
Is shrouded in the mist
Of worry, fear
Of hopes and dreams
And all that we resist.
Though as we put one foot
Then next
And make the road our own,
We see the vague
Becomes defined
As steps our souls have
Known.

There is one way to go
‘Cross life’s streams
As it were:
Take the dare
Stay aware
Fingers crossed
Everywhere.
