Pyrotechnical Prayer

May you light the sky

With color

Not with pain.

May you fill all hearts

With freedom

Not disdain.

May the booms resound

Within

To offer hope.

As the boons of

Independence

Widen scope.

Best Foot Forward

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

Mom always told him to put his best foot forward.

So he did.

He pulled it off and placed it in front of his wheelchair. It was the shorter prosthesis, the one that didn’t need straps around the hip to secure and the one he could even put a bit of weight on. Well, on good days, at least.

A sigh climbed in his chest, but he shook it off, took a deep breath, arranged the cardboard sign, and began:

“Oh say, can you see?…”

Despite it all, she knew

It was not meant to be this way,

Bereft of tether.

Despite it all, she understood

Wrong won’t hold sway

Forever.

So despite it all, she prayed

Easier breaths will soon be drawn

Together.

My Neighbor’s Bike

My first bike

Was a neighbor’s bike.

“Too many hills,” my mom had said

As if topography in any way diminished

The accelerated thrill

Of legs off pedals

From the top of the rise

To our street.

There was no arguing

Or vowing to share and never fight.

We knew her words were code

For “we cannot afford.”

But my sister’s friend across the street

Did have a bike

And with it the absolute power to dispense

Rides, routes, direction, and duration.

There were no training wheels

To ease one in.

There was no question of admitting

Complete lack of experience

And risking an evaporated offer.

So it was guts and trepidation

A stranglehold on the handlebar

And the utter exhilaration

Of flying.

Find Your Métier

Maybe it is healing

And the saving of lives,

Or the wonder of teaching

And forming young minds.

Maybe it is farming

To nourish and grow,

Or building the homes

For the shelter we know.

Maybe it is writing

Putting words to the page,

Or any vocation

That forms our age.

May it be that whatever

Strums your soul, fills your need

I pray that you find it

And its call you will heed.
