One cannot head to pasture
On a fine, chilly morn
Without checking to see if
One’s mane’s properly adorned.

You can captain a boat
Drive a car
Pilot planes,
But there’s nothing quite like
Driving this
Mini-train.

Her heart fluttered in her chest. She wiped sweaty palms on her jeans and tugged her cap lower on her head to manage jitters and glare.
She’d worked on this all summer. In secret. His birthday surprise.
She moved closer to the building, automatically scanning the terrain even though she knew it like the back of her hand.
There he was, waiting.
“Hi Dad!”
His face lit up and he and turned toward the elevator. “I’ll call it for you.”
“It’s okay, Dad,” she grinned and pushed up from the wheelchair. “Just give me your arm. I can walk up.”

“Bah,” they taunted. “Your resolutions never last.”
She stewed.
When her twin brothers showed up for their monthly siblings’-dinner, muscles and righteous bravado rippling under too-tight shirts, she knew what they were expecting: Frozen pizza or boxed mac-and-cheese. The usual Candace-can’t-cook stuff.
They sprawled on her couch and let her putter in the kitchen.
“When’s the pizza ready, Sis?” Brian called. “We’re starving.”
She smirked. He and Bobby lectured her alright, but she knew they secretly looked forward to their junkfood fix.
“Oh, no pizza,” she brought out the shot glasses. “Wheatgrass!”

Hold on to your hat
And the change in your pockets
They upended this house
From drawers to sockets.
You will see chairs on ceilings
Light fixtures on floors
Every room, nook, and cranny
Odder than one before.
Floating car in garage
Beds that won’t let you sleep
Basement’s legs in the sky
Will make gravity weep.
So come right on in
Come sideways and down
This whole silly house
Is a merry go clown.
