May the percussion of your heart
Beat not staccato in your core
But breathe legato in your soul
To sing vibrato to your whole.

Have mercy
For those who have not
For those who don’t know how
And weren’t taught.
Have mercy
For your own lost corners
Where the words of others
Might’ve carved a hole
That is yet to get darned
And still exacts a toll.
Have mercy
For your
Need to hope
You’d make your
Spirit
Whole.

She faced the sea’s relentless roil, the churning, fuming foam.
She found a quiet in the space
Between the breath of waves, a home.

Take a break from the city
From the din
From the crowds.
Walk yourself into quiet
Find a park
Riverside.
Turn the clamor to low
Let your breath
Ebb and flow.

As the surface of the water
Licks the surface of the sky
The depths of both
Stay hidden
Under aquamarine alibis.

In the monotonous pace of desert hikes, there lies a meditative calm: as wispy trails rise and descend, as footpaths curl around a bend, as dirt turns palettes of light and shade, as layers pressed in rock clutch eras so long gone, they are quite literally written in stone.

Every day I am reminded
How very partial I am
To the multitudes of
Living things
Upon this Earth.
They are all part of me
Just as I am part of all.
You see,
Our air has been
A zillion times recycled
Through innumerable breaths.
Each drop of water has been
In every ocean
Swam in every river
Rained on every land.
Molecules have merged into our very selves
From all that is around us.
Life has birthed and died and birthed
Repeatedly
So many times
That we are indeed
Essentially
Not just of one planet
But all One.

May the taste of life’s adventures
Be as varied
And as flavorful
As its promises,
And may sweet embellishments
Prove to be
A lot more than
Simply icing.

In the constant feed of drama
And five-minute-news of all-that’s-wrong
And all that must be done
And all that cannot yet
Or won’t be,
Seek a spot of shade
And a penchant for deep breathing.
Nurture moments of quietude
Of birdsong
Children’s laughter
And the breeze whispering
Sweet nothings to your soul.

As change and challenge come
And you are stretched
Beyond what seems possible
To overcome,
Recall
How transformation
Can become
Its own journey
To an unexpected
Outcome.
