It is fact
It is known
It’s beyond
Any doubt,
That there are plenty
(Most)
Things
He knows
Nothing about.

Congregate
Around the things that matter:
The hopes of young
To grow old
Without being gunned down
By hate long fed.
The voices that have gone
Unheard
By overwhelming glower
And will no more be silenced
By greed or dread.
Congregate
Around those who stand proud
To challenge unjust power.
It is the coming together
Which will pave
New roads
For change.
For The Daily Post

Assay the cost of
Apathetic heads
Or cheeks that turn
Again
The other way.
Know the high price of
Silence that
Lets massacre
Take hold for yet
Another day.
Do not give in.
Do not let up.
Step forth
And raise your voice
In truth
So it rings clear
Above the fray.

When begrimed, muddied waters
Swirl blurred currents of lies
It’s top time to insist
On maintaining
High
Ground.

Without some
Empathy
There’s no real
Sympathy.
So beware of
Those stating care
Who destroy
What is there.

When strolling down
The winding
Road
Of history
And conflit,
Beware of loopholes
Hiding
Spies
With
Less than helpful
Motives.
Look up
Look out
For any who
Proclaim
They own the path
To righteous.
Most likely they
Have arrows
Meant
To guarantee
Their profit.

There is static in the air,
Discord at what can no longer
Remain unchallenged.
There’s a buzz
To hold accountable
The hate and prejudice that has no space
Among the truly civilized.
There is hope amidst the noise:
The march of feet and hearts
That will not stay silent
At disrespect and bullying.
The sparks of light
That multiply to pull aside
The medieval darkness
Some wish to blanket over progress.
There is static in the air.
It crackles with potential.
May it smother ignorance
With wisdom.
May it end violence
Through empathy
And tolerance.
P.S. Since several of you had contacted me to ask about the photo: my nephew took this photo at the Gas Chambers in Auschwitz. The staining on the ceiling is from the Zyklon B poison. I thought this photo was an apt backdrop for the evils of racism and why it cannot be allowed to rise, no matter where or against whom or by.

When some try to
Evoke
Vile contempt
Foul report,
There is much more
At stake
Than a furious
Retort.
Don’t fall prey
To miasmas of
Hate and closed minds.
Do not let lower standards
Become somehow enshrined.
Call it out.
Name it loud.
But refuse the dishonorable
As normed or allowed.
Choose to level
Above.
Give a hand.
Hold on tight.
To a firm
Higher ground.

Treat this world
With care.
The wounds of past
The acts of now —
They are your very
Heartbeat
And weave
Your children’s
Only
Shelter.

Make any reservation
Resonate
With trust
So that holding
Onto
What can be
And what will
Come
Secures no doubts
Yet removes
No options
From the table
Save those
That have
Been found
Indigestible
To your
Heart
And mind.
