Organize

An Incoming Storm

Organize

To call hate by its name.

Mobilize

To tamp it with the fact:

That we all are equal

All human

All the same.

Organize

To nip the flames of violence

By speaking up

For truth.

Assemble

Not in fire

But in numbers

Old and youth.

Organize

To let terror have no place

It has no valid

Salute.

Marshal

Not guns or clubs

But tolerance

It is the only nationality

The one acceptable

Route.

Destinations matter

But so does the path taken toward them.

Ends do not always justify the means

Or conveyance.

Lofty goals to imagined glory

Only have prerogative

If they do not burn

Destruction

Or trample others

In their wake.

For The Daily Post

Do Not Settle

yardstick

Do not settle for substandard conduct.

For unacceptable ways of talking to and of another

Even if – especially if – they are among those you disagree with

Or maybe prefer to not understand.

Do not settle for substandard leadership.

For unbecoming ways of working with some who oppose your views

And yet are part of you

Part of your country

Part of what holds a mirror to your blind spots

And what makes you into

Who you are and can become.

Don’t settle for the substandard fantasy

That misleads you to believe yourself somehow better

Than another

Because of your religion, gender, party, origin, or baseball cap.

You are not.

Better.

We are all of us defined by our actions, not our acronyms.

We can be raised or felled by the choices that we make:

To go low

Or rise above

To sink into the mire

Or to raise the discourse

From the gutter

Back to civilized.

Do not settle for substandard

Language

For slurs and rudeness not fit for the ears of anyone

Let alone our children.

Settle not for the reactivity of hate and violence

Of disdain for the vulnerable

And disregard to others whom you declare guilty by an affiliation

Different than yours.

Do not settle

For substandard influence

When you know better.

Raise the standard.

So those who keep lowering the bar

Not think it has become the norm

To celebrate the rude or bow to the crass

When either are so

Very far

Below par.

The boy who was a girl

spiderman

“I saw a boy who is a girl,” the six-year-old noted. We were wrapping up a session and he was coloring a Spider-Man drawing he’d made.

“Oh?” I offered. I don’t always know where things are heading when children offer out-of-the-blue declarations. Instead of assuming, I try to stay out of the child’s way till they say more or clarify.

“Yeah,” the little guy added. “He is a boy on the outside but he is really a girl on the inside.”

“I see.”

He lifted long-eyelashes with an adorable ‘is-she-really-listening-or-just-pretending-to’ look. When our eyes met, he nodded in satisfaction and lowered his gaze back to his drawing. He regarded it quietly for a few seconds then rummaged through the colored pencil box. “Aha!” he announced, pulled out the silver pencil, and meticulously drew squiggly lines over his superhero’s bodysuit.

“Yeah,” the boy said, “just like Spider-Man.”

I made a noncommittal noise in my throat and he looked up at me again, eyes slightly narrowed in concentration. “Yes,” the little boy stressed, “because you see, sometimes he is a regular man on the outside but he is still really Spider-Man on the inside.”

Taper to Expand

Taper your prejudices

So they not block the light

Of real understanding.

Taper your worries

So they let in

Newborn paths.

Taper your reliance on

Hearing only what fits

Your opinion.

Taper your righteous

Indignation

So it leaves room

For your heart

And mind

To truly

Expand.

Be Tender

Be tender as you tender views and voice perspectives.

Be tender as you offer paths that some refuse (or fear) to take.

Be tender as you formulate your retorts to invectives.

Be tender even as you know how much’s at stake.

Be tender as you tender truth

As you hold fast to honest, fair objectives.

Do not lose heart

Even as some lose moral compass

And attempt to stain integrity

As disrespect.

Restore Reality

expose

Be brave.

It’s time. It’s been time for too long. It feels eternity.

Take heart … tune off naysayers … and remove the grime of fakery and deception. Speak fact to polish off stains of misinformation, so Truth can once more spread its wings to sunlight, unburdened from prevarication.

Expose the burnish of veracity from under messy piles of perfidy.

Be kind, be firm, and wipe clean fib to showcase verity.

Reality awaits. Impatiently.

It is past time.

Brassy Doesn’t Mean Strong

Strength doesn’t lie in the pushy. Cocky does not powerful say. The shameless and showy lead no one ashore, just astray.

True power is held in alliance. In humility, empathy, care. Strength is achieved through the weaving of strands, not their fraying. Accordance is what grows a real, lasting greatness. Obstinacy makes success decay.

When the few rue the day, may the sensible many hold light, lead the way.

There is more good than bad in our world,

yet often bad shouts louder.

There’s more that’s beautiful than not,

though ugliness might steal the hour.

Love holds truth far more than hate,

and radiates the brighter.

So … be mindful of the disproportion …

as dark creeps in to dim what’s lighter.

And know:

Hearts will out-sing cacophony when led by hope,

even if fear may prowl the farther.
