Revealed,
Live truths of how both
Softness and thorns
Are required
To be healed.

As we hold endless heartache
Of scandal, war, crime, abuse
May we also remember
Gentler waves, kinder views;
So the holes rent by hardship
Will not make us refuse
To let pain become a window
To the good we can profuse.

It was their anniversary, and once again he was late.
The office manager held him up for nonsense that could’ve easily waited for tomorrow. Mr. Billings often did so when Gary was in a rush. It was a cruel little game he played, knowing that with previous ‘insubordination’ records in his file, Gary could not afford even the slightest reprimand. No job, no health insurance.
His phone buzzed as he rushed to the restaurant. A text.
“Lost?”
Mary. Gary’s heart sank. He ran faster. His phone vibrated again.
“I’m under a blue umbrella. You know, in case of rain.”

So the meetings that were called a lie
Had in fact taken place on the sly
And collusion repeatedly denied
Is now admitted as if justified
While a letter obviously dictated
Proves a propaganda calculated.
No question remains
For anyone who has brains
That those who yell out “Fake-news”
Are the ones who perjure and ruse
Just as they who the fact-finders accuse
Are the ones to truth molest and abuse.

Them to know

One cannot pacify hatred
By fueling more hate,
Just as violence will not be calmed
Via harming.
Arguments aren’t settled
When truths are shut up,
Nor can peace be made by
The war-glorifying.
There is no equality
While oppression is sought
And brutality cannot
Bring on healing.
So rallies where ‘greatness’
Is clothed in cruel acts
Breed not power nor awe
But disdain,
As leadership’s hubris is paid
By the vulnerable
Again and again.

Forsaken,

Are silenced,
For no fault
But being
Born
Into hardship
