Be candid
But kind.
Speak your truth
With open mind.
Give no value
To harm.
Be mindful.
Keep calm.

There is static in the air,
Discord at what can no longer
Remain unchallenged.
There’s a buzz
To hold accountable
The hate and prejudice that has no space
Among the truly civilized.
There is hope amidst the noise:
The march of feet and hearts
That will not stay silent
At disrespect and bullying.
The sparks of light
That multiply to pull aside
The medieval darkness
Some wish to blanket over progress.
There is static in the air.
It crackles with potential.
May it smother ignorance
With wisdom.
May it end violence
Through empathy
And tolerance.
P.S. Since several of you had contacted me to ask about the photo: my nephew took this photo at the Gas Chambers in Auschwitz. The staining on the ceiling is from the Zyklon B poison. I thought this photo was an apt backdrop for the evils of racism and why it cannot be allowed to rise, no matter where or against whom or by.

Make conversation
With your heart.
Put into words
The beat
The pulse
The hope
The life.
Make conversation
With the rhythms
Of your mind.
Get to know
You
As you would
A best friend
A soulmate
A reluctant
Spirit guide.

As life flows
Growth unfolds
Slow ascent through
Time foretold
Small steps tolled
Wisdom dolled.

There is one way to go
‘Cross life’s streams
As it were:
Take the dare
Stay aware
Fingers crossed
Everywhere.

As every day rolls in
So clearly new to me
I realize the ever changing
Neophyte I am to life
And still will be.

Beware the prod
When arrows nod.
Their seeming prompt
May in fact be
The footprints stomped
To show the real way
Out the swamp.

“I don’t know what to expect,” he said.
“Expect the unexpected,” the old woman smiled.
His smooth brow wrinkled,
Unconvinced but polite.
Her smile grew.
She patted his arm and sighed.
She, too, had been a greenhorn
To life
Intent on knowing
What cannot be known
Before experiences
Arrive.

Life will loop back
Onto itself
A coil of time,
A wreath of memories
Unwound,
Revisiting.
Hold tight. Ride on.
A curve will come.
A turn to grow.
Till the next loop
Flows back
Contracting
Time.

While life streams by in flows of odd
And change evolves
Or roils
Or frightens,
Some truths remain forever uniform:
Love holds
Hate shatters,
Reason wizens
Division splatters,
Hope grows
Care matters.
