I’d rather be
As I am
Just in a world
Less fraught
With wrong
And sorrow.
And yet,
If in my druthers
Things were not
Exactly as they are
In both joy and dismay,
What would make me
Be exactly
As I am
Today?

It is fact
It is known
It’s beyond
Any doubt,
That there are plenty
(Most)
Things
He knows
Nothing about.

It is oh so typical
To pen long lists
Inside my head,
To have such plenty
Meant for doing,
But complete
Just a smidge
Instead.

In the messy path of life
Dreams flurry in
Goals exhale partly out,
And in the lovely expectation
Of more order
In a few,
Lives the absolute prediction
That periodic tangle
Will ensue.

There is sludge
That won’t budge
There is gumming of parts
So the muck
Becomes stuck
As so many now fudge
And prefer to hold grudge
‘Stead of clearing the gunk
Of those who claim truth is junk
Who treat lies
As their prize
And demise
As new highs.

In a trance, you transcend.
Or defend.
Or lose sight.
Use it wisely
Lest you intend
To upend
What should remain
Firm in mind.

Do not settle for substandard conduct.
For unacceptable ways of talking to and of another
Even if – especially if – they are among those you disagree with
Or maybe prefer to not understand.
Do not settle for substandard leadership.
For unbecoming ways of working with some who oppose your views
And yet are part of you
Part of your country
Part of what holds a mirror to your blind spots
And what makes you into
Who you are and can become.
Don’t settle for the substandard fantasy
That misleads you to believe yourself somehow better
Than another
Because of your religion, gender, party, origin, or baseball cap.
You are not.
Better.
We are all of us defined by our actions, not our acronyms.
We can be raised or felled by the choices that we make:
To go low
Or rise above
To sink into the mire
Or to raise the discourse
From the gutter
Back to civilized.
Do not settle for substandard
Language
For slurs and rudeness not fit for the ears of anyone
Let alone our children.
Settle not for the reactivity of hate and violence
Of disdain for the vulnerable
And disregard to others whom you declare guilty by an affiliation
Different than yours.
Do not settle
For substandard influence
When you know better.
Raise the standard.
So those who keep lowering the bar
Not think it has become the norm
To celebrate the rude or bow to the crass
When either are so
Very far
Below par.

Be tender as you tender views and voice perspectives.
Be tender as you offer paths that some refuse (or fear) to take.
Be tender as you formulate your retorts to invectives.
Be tender even as you know how much’s at stake.
Be tender as you tender truth
As you hold fast to honest, fair objectives.
Do not lose heart
Even as some lose moral compass
And attempt to stain integrity
As disrespect.

Be brave.
It’s time. It’s been time for too long. It feels eternity.
Take heart … tune off naysayers … and remove the grime of fakery and deception. Speak fact to polish off stains of misinformation, so Truth can once more spread its wings to sunlight, unburdened from prevarication.
Expose the burnish of veracity from under messy piles of perfidy.
Be kind, be firm, and wipe clean fib to showcase verity.
Reality awaits. Impatiently.
It is past time.

There needs to be an extra chair now at the table, another place setting, extra fork. The bath requires extra towels. Reading choices necessitate an added pause. There are lively conversations from the bedroom, laughter, whispered dialogue, deep monologues. A seat to save in rides, a window-or-middle deliberation. Opinions of a first-line advisor, a determined intermediate, a confidante.
Granted, he is secretive, selective, and exclusive. It doesn’t mean he isn’t a good friend.
Accepting him is fact, not question. Get used to it. He’s there. He may not show up to explain, but he will not be ignored or shunned. Be nice. He has deep feelings. He has needs. A keen mind.
Should not matter that he is a dragon-human made of magic. Invisible to all but a certain little one.
