They gathered in formation. Pressed close against each other, every atom tight, compressed, readied for flight.
The energy reverberated. Excitement climbed.
“On your mark!”
They huddled to the center.
Bright. Bright.
“Let go!”

She strained
Against walls which
Heaved
About her.
She tensed limbs and
Tucked her
Chin
Fighting for a
Purchase
Around her.
And still the world
Convulsed.
Impossible in
Pressure.
Till sudden
Light.
A gasp of cold
As air
Rushed
Into lungs
To life her.

She is early in birth
And early in breath,
Independent in all.
She’s come forth barely cooked
But is here even so
Stubbornly grabbing hold
Ravenous in her howls,
In a world just a tad
Unprepared
For her life-hungry spirit
And determined
Big soul.

“It’s not hard,” she said. “Here, I’ll show you.”
“You make a circle …” she demonstrated. “Then you make eyes and mouth and little bit of hair and hands and legs. See?”
She held the drawing up to show me. Lines for arms and legs sprouted out of the crooked circle ‘head,’ topped by a few smaller lines of a sparse mohawk.
“Then,” she planted the paper back on the table, “you go to the hospital and the doctor makes magic and it’s a baby.”
