As salutes recoil
And bugles call
May hearts recall
The arms emptied
And the lives ended
For freedoms defended
As sorrows entwine
With honor defined.

He assumed he was right.
He assumed you were wrong.
He believed bullish bluster equated with
Strong.
He refused to consider
Prejudice
Lies
Pretense.
He demanded complete admiration
Instead.
He assumed he would lead.
He assumed you will follow.
He may well find himself quite lonely
Tomorrow.

Every man is an island:
Unique,
Not above.
Yet some sadly equate
Ego-worship,
With love.

It can spread.
It can blight.
It can seek a new host
To infect
With malaise.
But the ill
Need not creep
Onto me
Onto thy.
We can rise
Above rudeness.
Inoculate
Against hate.
We can choose to
Remain
Stubbornly
Humane.

What may seem all
Lopsided
May in fact be
Quite straight,
While what purports to be
Level
May be completely
Bent.

May spring’s burble over rocks
Turn rapids
As the flow
Of truth
Speeds forth,
Gains force,
Come fall.

When the time comes
To opine
Ethics
(And their current deep dearth),
Let it be known
There’s no option
For hiding in bubbles
Of privileged stealth.
Make it clear
There’s no air
And no vistas ahead
Till we muster the courage
To reclaim truth instead.

May the tide turn
May the flow return
May the long days of summer
Calm the ongoing churn.
May the sun warm cold hearts
Give their minds better charts
May the surf’s ancient drummer
Pulse a path to new starts.

It is not
The bruisers
Who denote
Importance
For what one should
Obey or discern.
It is the smallest
And the vulnerable
Who call
True attention
To the biggest
Issues
Left to tend.
