Layered Shelter

I am mesmerized by this photo of roof in Greece, taken by my niece (hey, I rhyme!).

The weathered slate, the overlapping chipped tiles that had seen more winters than any human could and many more still before they had been hewed into order by mankind to provide heavy, steady, shelter from rain and wind and sun.

The stark contrast of the chimney stone. Orderly. Newish. Mortar sandwiched between bricks. Standing out like a new-kid-on-the-block yet in truth only relatively … for it, too, had already seen life’s smoke swirl up to numerously different skies.

Even the odd bits. Leaning, slanted. Metal. Wood. A ledge. A mini-roof covered by yet another one. Mismatched and somehow all part of this layered shelter. Angled. Rough. Tangible.

A roof to rely on.

Thorny Matters

Sometimes spikes

May well mean

You best keep your

Distance.

However,

If you take the time

To understand

That prickly often means

Protective,

You may find

Some thorny people

Can with kind acceptance

And a bit of patience

Come to share

Sweet fruit.

Sweet Nothings

a spot of shade

Photo: Na’ama Yehuda

In the constant feed of drama

And five-minute-news of all-that’s-wrong

And all that must be done

And all that cannot yet

Or won’t be,

Seek a spot of shade

And a penchant for deep breathing.

Nurture moments of quietude

Of birdsong

Children’s laughter

And the breeze whispering

Sweet nothings to your soul.

Differentiate Defiance

Outlier AtaraKatz

Differentiate the urge

To disobey

For pure defiance’s sake,

From the value of resisting

Those who violate

Or lower what’s at stake.

Refuse the rush

Of righteousness

That rebellions can wake,

And replace it with the strength

Of discerning hate from kindness,

Truth from fake.

Sorrow and Hope

Red AmitaiAsif

Like pebbles on the beach

Like grains of sand

Like leaves upon the trees

Like flowers in a meadow

May we never be alone

In sorrow

And in hope.

May we find solace

In each other

And may compassion

Weave heart strands together

So we remember

How alike we are

Each one its own true flower

Each one part of the whole

In sorrow

And in hope.

A Tribute in Light

Tribute in Light — Photo: DOD

On the eve of 9/11

In this city that has been forever changed

As it had its core humanity

Revealed

In uncountable acts of kindness

Under devastation,

I revisit

The day

The sky grew dark

With smoke

And hearts broke open

With compassion.
