Good for his mama for teaching him to be discerning in seeking help AND for letting him know that he CAN seek help if there’s something too big or difficult for him to manage. As for the task itself–I think the match is perfect! A cop ones told me that police officers tie very good knots–the last thing you want is to have a lace go loose when you’re chasing a suspect…

A very heartening human interest story. However, most parents do not counsel their older sons of color in this way, given the history of past negative encounters between the police and young males of color in our society.

Yes Beverly, so true, and so sad. At the same time, stories of things that are less stereotypical are of value, if only as means to show us that there are other ways of being, and that hope is ever possible.
