“Can you see her?” Emma rose on tiptoes and lifted her chin to add inches to her five-foot frame.
I smiled. What Emma lacked in stature, she made up for in sheer stubbornness. She felt tall.
We had parked on the far side of the marina and were approaching from behind the stage, facing the crowd. A sea of heads corralled by masts.
“She isn’t in the first row,” I noted, puzzled. Aunt Tilda was a front-row fixture in all local concerts.
“Look again,” Emma insisted. “If it’s free, you bet she’d staked her claim since the day before yesterday.”

I’m not sure there’s going to be good news about Aunt Tilda

Oh, I dunnow. I think she probably will be spotted in a moment, on her folding chair, with her picnic basket, sun-umbrella, and blanket … π

In my hometown, we have a parade which is the biggest in the State. One lady we have all known for years always reserves her spot by the courthouse, probably around 4:30am. Sadly, no parade this year. But, we know the feeling.

π Yeah, I think most of us know someone – personally or by sight – who is like that. π And yes, sadly this year things will be different …

Na’ama Y’karah,
I love the vivid personalities you created in Emma and Aunt Tilda. You told me much about them in so few words. Good one. (I like front row seats since I’m not quite 5 foot nothing.)
Shalom,
Rochelle

Glad you liked it! Yeah, I think Aunt Tilda and Emma are related … (and I have a feeling Aunt Tilda likes the front row for visibility reasons, too … π ). As for front row seats – they are fab, but are you a diehard like Aunt Tilda and stake your claim two days in advance? … π

You must be keen to stake your claim two days in advance. I’m sure she’ll be there.

Aunt Tilda is the epitome of “keen to stake her claim” … so, yeah, I think she’s there … π

So descriptive that I can see her even if you and Emma can’t! Nice one.
Here’s mine!

LOL, Thanks, Keith! Can you give me a hint where to look? Emma has tried to climb onto the stage for some perspective but was removed by security … π

It’s her new hat that’s misleading you. The old floppy straw bonnet finally wore out (well, it caught fire actually, but that’s another story…) and she’s wearing a smart pink baseball cap. Yes, I know – you wouldn’t ever expect her to wear something like that, but – heck! – you wouldn’t ever expect to see me crowd surfing either.
Loved this story, Na’ama – so many super details!

So much fun, my friend! Love that Emma is a little five-foot nuthin with a huge personality who will definitely find Aunt Tilda.
Love it.

She’s probably managed to actually get on the stage π
I like the line “She felt tall” – describes her personality well.

I loved it that at only 5-foot nothing, she FELT tall :). I’m just barely 5′ and sometimes I forget just how short that really is!

I donnow what “how short that really is” other than one might need help getting the cereal boxes from the top shelves at the market … π It is EXCELLENT for legroom on the airplane, for example, and for being able to swing one’s legs from park benches and most chairs. π
(I’m average height, so, boring … ;))

I used to climb the shelves to get what I couldn’t reach, but at my age and with my rickety back, that’s not very smart. So I use my cane π

Yep. Canes are SUPER handy (pun and all?) for these kinda’ things. I’ve been known to do same … π

Man, this is like my family when we used to go to free concerts at the park. It’s part of the fun of the thing. I’m sure they’ll all have a grand time, especially if Aunt Tilda decides to share her front row spot with them. π

I have a feeling that’s what they are hoping for – a piggyback ride on an early-arriving-diehard’s spot. π
And, nothing wrong with being there as early as they let ya! π

I have a friend who’s an Emma. She always gets stuck behind a tall person. I don’t know how many times I’ve traded seats with her to no avail.

LOL! I hope she does! It’s been suggested that she just changed a hat, or that she’s in the loo, or that she is in the Green Room hobnobbing with the rockstars … π

LOL – I’m not particularly tall myself — very average height here. But I do sometimes sport a walking cane, which can be VERY helpful in adding inches to one’s arm-span … AND, I’ve seen some 6 footer person reach up to the Northern reaches under the ceilings to get stuff. It is impressive. I have several mast-height-personage in my extended family and it never fails to impress me that they look DOWN INTO the refrigerator!! π
