Down the slippery slope
Of icy past
And current treachery
They go,
Balancing precariously
On the edge of
What to do
With what they know.

He will carve mountains
For them.
Slow but steady
In his pressure.
Relentless
In the calculated cold of his
Convictions,
That curl like tight fists
Under an unquestioning love.
He has carved himself
In the process,
Into valleys of sacrifice.
Carved them, too,
Into mirror images
To reflect the truths he holds.
He will carve mountains
For them,
Heavy-handed and doggedly
Protective.
Glacial with volcanic undertones.

When faced with
This-is-just-impassable,
The oh-too-dangerous,
And far-too-far
To pull out from;
One step
And then
A careful second,
With a resolute pick
And sturdy rope,
Will help lock arms
With trembling courage,
To climb you out
Of hazard’s maw.

At the fringe of the habitable
Where the ice kisses sky,
And the black rock remembers
Lava’s wrath, ashes’ sigh,
The cold wraps hands around hearts
To reach deep and warmth pry.

Take heed where
Out of the blue
Slides a clear
Frozen flue,
Weeping ice
Telling you
That more change
Is in queue.

Every year it shrinks back
Every year it grows less
Till too soon
It will be
But a memory
Unless.

The warming effect
Of company
Atop icy ground,
Lend the mountain
A hat
Topped with pompom
And cloud.

It’s the light
It’s the mood
It’s the tone
In the air
It’s the frowning
Of brows
And the cold
Atmosphere
It’s the half-frozen
Words
And the
Brrr
Everywhere.
