What Lenny Would Build

“I don’t know what to make of it,” Arlene shook her head.

“Of the sunset?” Molly’s already reedy voice rose higher.

Arlene took a deep breath. She forgot just how literal her sister-in-law was.

“No, the sunset is beautiful,” she stated. “And the arches.”

Molly turned to face Arlene. The glow from the ball of fire in the distance rendered one of her cheeks fire-orange, the other ashen-gray.

“So what did you mean?”

Arlene pointed to the oddly shaped building to their right. “This. Looks like what Lenny would build.”

“Lenny is three.” Molly noted.

“Exactly,” Arlene said.

His Royalness

“You lift up to make him king. You lower before dethroning.”

Molly stared at Davis’s face, uncertain what to do with hers. Some hazing was expected on orientation day. But this?

Davis glared back, and she nodded as if in comprehension, desperate for a glint of mirth to reassure her he was joking.

There was none.

“And are there guidelines for when either happens?” she attempted.

Davis’s eyes narrowed and Molly swallowed. There goes her job.

The man bowed to the doll. “Please forgive her ignorance, Your Royalness.”

He turned to Molly. “Beware, for your predecessor lost her head.”

Pink Elephant

Pink Elephant NaamaYehuda (2)

There’s a very pink

Elephant on the sidewalk

With nail polish

Half done.

Children stare

Babies point

But many others walk on.

As in many a living room

Where elephants silently stand,

Perhaps New York City adults

Aren’t easily stunned.

Make Gravity Weep

Hold on to your hat

And the change in your pockets

They upended this house

From drawers to sockets.

You will see chairs on ceilings

Light fixtures on floors

Every room, nook, and cranny

Odder than one before.

Floating car in garage

Beds that won’t let you sleep

Basement’s legs in the sky

Will make gravity weep.

So come right on in

Come sideways and down

This whole silly house

Is a merry go clown.
