The least of hardship was when
She broke her toe,
Age nine,
Her youngest brother
Then a mewling newborn
In her arms.
She’d been pacing
Through the night
To let Mother
Recover some.
Ever the intrepid
Elder child,
Rose missed but
A step,
Taped her toes,
And walked on
Till the morn.

Thanks, Dale! Yep, intrepid, especially for a nine-year-old … I actually broke my toe while walking with my newborn niece in the dark living room of their house to let my sister and brother in law get some shut eye. I bumped into the leg of the couch and it was ouch-a-crunch … I breathed. I breathed. I scrunched my face. I taped the toes and went on pacing and rocking the cutie patootie. But I was an adult … I can only imagine how much fortitude it would take of a child! And yet, some are oh-so-very parentified.

I somehow felt this was autobiographical in a sense…

๐ I think we probably most of us have some ‘crunch’ memory of toe-busting … ๐

Na’ama Y’karah,
No doubt Rose will always be her little brother’s advocate. Painfully sweet.

A delightful tale. I wonder if her brother came to learn of it later in life.
Here’s mine!

I don’t know – Rose seems to be the kind who’d just soldier on and not make much of it. However, if her mother was the kind to take note of a child’s sacrifice, perhaps she would have told her son as means to have him know his sister’s devotion. ๐
