They took the temperature

Of the crowd,

And realized they could

Twist skeins of truth into

Great blobs of knotted lies,

Then sell

As remedy

To now a fevered mob,

A distorted gospel

Bloated with melodramatic

Sighs.

    • Perhaps because there is a historical repetition of some whipping up a frenzy for distortion, in the name of devotion … I am reminded of neighbors burning neighbors at the stake “in the name of” their supposed God, with a messianic fervor no less jarring than what we see today. Or of sheet-wearing men lynching other human beings, under the guise (and in cowardly disguise) of morality, but for the sake of hate, violence, and power. And then I don’t wonder quite so much how. Perhaps some humans are attracted to being intoxicated by supposed superiority, at the cost of real morality. …
