They thought it mattered to him that it wasn’t fancy. That he’d care it was damp. Or old. Or cobbled together from what materials could be found.
They were wrong.
All he ever wanted was a roof that did not leak, a hearth that could be lit, food enough to fill his belly, safety in his sleep, a bed that did not bite, walls that did not threaten to collapse about his ears.
The cabin was all that.
And more.
Sure, it had housed horses, and smelled of them, sometimes.
It only made it more a home.
A stable home.

Lovely double meaning. Well done.

Our needs can be very simple can’t they? Even as our wants multiply

Yes, very true! Especially true for those who’d known scarcity and therefore understand the real hierarchy of needs. Safety. Sustenance. Sleep.

This was beautiful, Na’ama. A home at last. A palace to him, no doubt. Dry and away from the elements. Lovely. Just lovely.

Thank you, Dale! Sometimes a home is all one needs. At the very least as a secure base from which to venture and to which to return. We forget how basic, basic needs are. And how without them, little matters.

Yes. Basic needs being met is all we really need.

And then, when they are met, we can look for things we want and enjoy, and that is fine, too. 🙂

Na’ama, what a sweet story. I can see where that place would make a cozy place to dwell.

Yep. I don’t think I’d mind it, myself. Just a little paved area before the door, to clear the mud and take them boots of before entering. 😉

Stable home. LOL. I love it. I have to admit that seeing this picture gave me a similar reaction. I bet this would be 1) super cheap and 2) people would wonder if anyone really lived there. What’s not to love? It could be a converted stable and that works too.

Yeah!! I’m totally cool with the concept, too! 🙂
(How fun with the word play, eh? I adore language!)

Na’ama Y’karah,
Not everyone needs a three story mansion. It sounds like his tastes are humble and his needs basic. Although it makes me wonder what the rest of his story is. Of course a good play on words always has my vote. 😉 Good job!

Thank you, Rochelle! Yes, not everyone needs or wants a three story mansion. Too much to sweep … 😉 But, yeah, his story couldn’t have been simple … XOXO Na’ama

Perspective can mean so much. Reminds me of the time we stayed in a remodeled carriage house B&B. It was fun, but probably not a full time deal. I am all in for a bed that does not bite. 🙂

Great title. The basic survival needs may be simple – sustenance and shelter, but it’s the stability that provides our emotional survival. The ‘All he ever wanted’ line tells me there’s a less than ‘stable’ backstory in there for your MC. Very intriguing.

Thanks, Margaret! And … yes, his priorities were probably set by what was not there … and what he’d learned to not necessarily expect.
