Spattered,
Scattered,
Splattered
Like galaxies
Of reversed light
Upon the expanse
Of skin.
Concentrated pigment
On the canvas
Of the body,
They speckle
Like stars
Reflected
In the negative of film.
Beloved,
They dance upon
The nose.
A freckled
Symphony
Of brown and gold.
For the dVerse Quadrille Challenge
Wonderful poem, Na,ama. Enjoyed it!

You did the noble freckle up right, Na’ama. I like your comparisons to the big things.

Thank you! I do adore freckles. Am not quite so freckled as the photo I put with the poem, but I’ve got my share, and I love them all (even those my dermatologist decides to remove… ) ๐

That’s lovely. It should be posted to every freckle-bearer, for they do bemoan their bestarred face

Ah, Crispina, thank you! I adore mine, but I know many don’t like their freckles — one of my nieces used to bemoan her (adorable!!!) freckles, but I think she’d made peace with them since … ๐

I remember as kids my sister had freckles. But I’m sure she hasn’t got any now. Perhaps they need exposure to sun…

Freckles do ‘come out more’ in the sun — I have a lot more that are visible in summer than in winter. But I think the underlying ‘tendency’ for freckles is there regardless. Some people might ‘grow out of them,’ I suppose. I happen to keep mine until such time that my dermatologist lays an eye on one that took a turn … and then it’s ‘out’ FOREVER … ๐

Well, my sister hasn’t had hers removed, and neither does she cover them with make-up. I think they just don’t see the sun.

That’ll probably do it, too …

You began your quadrille so well with a list of three verbs that rhyme beautifully and evoke freckles without the word even being mentioned and then brought it to a crescendo with the simile:
โLike galaxies
Of reversed light
Upon the expanse
Of skinโ
and the metaphor:
โA freckled
Symphony
Of brown and goldโ.

This was such a fun prompt! I’ve always loved freckles – have some of my own … – and the unique way they dot a person. Like a little spotted map of lovely. ๐

As a freckled-face kid, I appreciate your poem all the more. Mine seem to have diminished, not by any choice of my own, mind you… I always liked them!

I’m pretty freckled myself. Not quite like the photo in the post, but certainly freckled … (and it keeps my dermatologist VERY busy these days … ;)). I adore freckles. ๐
