“I’m going out for a walk and a bite,” he said.
No one answered.
Not that he expected anyone to. It was just a habit. A way of hearing his own voice. A way of reminding himself he still had one to use. A connection to other times and places.
And people.
It’s been a while since there was anyone home who could reply.
He took the fishing rod and pail. “It’s time to go,” he said to the bait. “I see you ate the leaves I left you yesterday. Good job!”
The spider on the eaves stirred when he shut the door. “You keep an eye,” he saluted with the rod and chuckled. “More than one, since you have them.”
The evening light was soft. The lake was quiet. The water had barely a ripple.
“Hello there, swimmers,” he greeted. “Who would come to keep my gullet company tonight?”

And it’s not strange that he speaks as if someone is there. I do the same. A means of keeping sanity, I suppose

I talk to stuff all the time. Just because they don’t answer in Human, doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate the connection … 😉

Nice story. I live alone and could go days without to speaking to anyone. I often speak to myself and answer back. I sometimes speak to photos of family on the walls. I believe I am totally sane 😂.

I talk to things all the time. Never saw a reason not to… 😁

I live with two adult kids and talk to things… At least the things listen!
All jokes aside… Is that how we keep our sanity?
Where the hell do you come up with your ideas?

Yep! Me too! I talk to stuff all the time. I mean, why not? Not to mention that stuff rarely argues with me (overtly at least … I swear some items that shall remain unnamed are passive aggressive…)… 😁

I know what you’re saying… There are things that seem to talk back…

Yeah, and some have DNA that is alarmingly close to our own yet I find it difficult to believe they are …

PS – I will be careful about talking to electronics. These days they CAN and DO talk back … and you better believe it that they LISTEN … 😉

And you can be sure that other than my laptop (which I know is pushing it) and my cellphone, there will be no Alexa or Gooogle Home or anything of that ilk that will enter my home. Because I KNOW they listen!

Truth, that! Mine on all those devices (cortana, google, alexa, whatsmacallita) are manually disabled (though I don’t know that this means they aren’t sorta’ listening anyway without me knowing that they are … at least I can have the illusion that I’d told them to cork their ears and close them eyes). …

Ah’know. Thing is, as long as there is breath (i.e. battery charge) in the device … who knows what the innards are perceiving and delivering to whomever … (did I freak you out yet? Don’t get me STARTED about all the info your credit card ‘tells’ the credit card company, the stores you use it in, and all the companies that buy this information … ;))
Suddenly I’m feeling an odd urge to move offgrid someplace. Wanna?

Absolutely! I’m ready!
Did you ever hear the one where the guy orders pizza and the bot on the end of the line starts with verifying his address and ends up telling him his cholesterol is too high? IT goes on and on and of course, I can’t find it now…

Well, these days, it was essentially a pizza bot doing a telehealth session. 😉
